Self Care Sunday- Physical Self Care

Updated: Mar 25, 2020

On this Sunday's "Self Care Sunday" we're focusing on the most talked about form of self care which is physical self care. To comprehend the dynamics of physical self care, one must first understand the physical self. The physical self refers to the body, it is the tangible aspect of us that can be seen and touched and is often associated with a machine comprised of complex physical, moving parts. Maintaining health and balance within the physical self is crucial since all other aspects such as emotional, social and so on are not possible without the physical self. Furthermore, neglecting your body's needs affects your mental, emotional and social well being. A vast majority of people are walking around, barely functioning in a constant burnout state. Think of your body's wear and tear similar to that of your car. What happens if you forget to fill your gas tank or miss an oil change? What about you guys who turn up your music to ignore a random noise and end up with a bigger, more expensive problem later on? We tend to passively dismiss warning signs because it's something we can put off for another time. Unfortunately, sometimes we adopt this practice with our physical health and wellbeing as well. How long have you been experiencing that pain in your back or stiffness in your neck? Maybe its a random lump on your body that has you wondering if you bumped into something. Surely you would agree that most of us tend to brush these things aside until we're forced to address them.

Neglecting the needs of the physical self are almost always detrimental in the long run, you can strive to maintain balance and preserve the welfare of your body by implementing steps such as:

  • Getting regular checkups at your doctor or dentist

  • Implementing an exercise routine

  • Getting proper sleep

  • Maintaining a balanced diet that is beneficial to the needs of your body

  • Drinking adequate water

  • Practicing proper hygiene

  • Drinking alcohol in moderation

Along with preserving health there are ways to maintain wellness and de stress your body like:

  • Getting a professional massage

  • Doing a face mask

  • Attending to your sexual needs in a way that is legally and socially possible

  • Taking a walk in nature

  • Having a warm bath

  • Playing a sport

Essentially, taking care of your overall physical wellbeing puts your body in a better position to handle the stresses of daily life. As the needs of our bodies differ individually so would our various approaches to physical self care.
